Brent Sweeny earns Internet2 leadership award

IU internet pioneer Brent Sweeny returned from the 2014 Internet2 Global Summit with the President’s Leadership Award. The prestigious honor caps his nearly 40-year career of promoting advanced research and education networks around the world.

Sweeny came to IU as a graduate student, eventually rising to his current position as senior network engineer at the Global Research Network Operations Center (GlobalNOC).

“Brent essentially introduced the Internet to IU and the greater Bloomington community,” said Brad Wheeler, IU vice president for IT and CIO.

Bestowed at the April conference in Denver, the Internet2 President's Leadership Award recognizes exceptional service and dedication to the community – service well above and beyond what is expected.

Sweeney’s award takes notice of his unflagging efforts as an instructor and his critical role establishing the first internet protocol network at IU Bloomington. Throughout his tenure at IU,  “Sweeny has been an innovative, boundary-pushing colleague,” said Dave Jent, IU associate vice president for networks.
