Brent Sweeny

After a nearly 40-year career at Indiana University, Brent Sweeny retired on May 31, 2014. Sweeny provided operations support for the most advanced research and education networks in Indiana, across the US, and around the world. His expertise in the realm of high-performance networking began in the 1980s, when he connected IU and other Midwest universities to the Internet. In the 1990s, he served as IU's lead network engineer, helping design and build Abilene, Internet2's first national network.

Sweeny actively served on several technical advisory groups, working groups, and technical conferences -- including the TransPAC3 operational advisory group, the Internet2 Internet Protocol Version 6 Working Group, the National Coordinating Office-sponsored Joint Engineering Team, the Asia-Pacific Advanced Network, and the Quilt Telepresence Working Group.

In honor of his long-term service, Sweeny received IU's highest staff honor and the Internet2 President's Leadership Award. He holds bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of California, Riverside, and began working at IU in 1976.
